About Us
The Department was instituted in the year 1961, in line with the University of Mines and Technology’s vision of becoming a centre of excellence for producing world class professionals for the mining industries. Accordingly,
The Department of Mining Engineering currently offers a four-year degree programme leading to the award of BSc Degree in Mining Engineering. The programme aims at producing graduates capable of exploiting mineral deposits by surface and underground mining techniques and to handle associated environmental issues. The Department also runs Postgraduate Programmes in Mining Engineering leading to the award of Postgraduate Diploma (PgD), Master of Science (MSc), Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees.
The Department also runs a one-year Certificate Programme in Surface and Underground Mining for personnel in the mining and quarry industry sector to take up middle level jobs in the minerals extraction and quarry industry, especially the small/medium/large scale mining sector and quarries in Ghana.
The Department intends to run a two year Diploma in Mining Engineering Programme in the near future. Short courses are also run for industry members to empower them in their career progression. The Department has special interest in sustainable small-scale mining in Ghana and, thus, strongly supports the University’s collaboration with the Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners to offer training and extension services to the Association.
